Chiefs Hope OL Problems Don’t Hold Them Up Against Titans

By Charles Jay

The Tennessee Titans expect that a regime change can help their franchise start moving in the right direction. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs are hoping that things go relatively similar to the way they were last year. These two teams will meet up on Sunday in the season opener as NFL betting action at BetAnySports gets underway at 1 PM ET at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

Ken Whisenunt, who coached the Arizona Cardinals to their only Super Bowl appearance, and is coming off a successful season serving as offensive coordinator in San Diego, gets another chance to be the head man, this time in Nashville, as he replaces Mike Munchak, the Hall of Famer who was let go after being part of the organization for over three decades. That is part of the general upheaval after the death of owner Bud Adams. In 2013, Tennessee finished 7-9 straight-up, and 6-9-1 against the pro football point spread. In Andy Reid’s first season at the helm in Kansas City, the Chiefs were 11-6 straight-up and 9-7-1 against the number (this includes the playoff game against Indianapolis).

In the NFL betting lines that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Chiefs are favored:

Kansas City Chiefs -3 (-115)
Tennessee Titans +3 (-105)

Over 43.5 Points -110
Under 43.5 Points -110

There are a lot of people were very anxious to see what Whisenhunt can do with quarterback Jake Locker, who has not necessarily been a bust but has not approached is perceived potential as an NFL signal-caller. The new head coach is known as somebody who perks up offenses, and Locker was 70% accurate in the pre-season. NFL bettors also know that Tennessee is looking for a team effort at the running back position. Shonn Greene was the workhorse last season, gaining over 1000 yards, and that prompted the departure of Chris Johnson. The Titans are also looking for contributions from rookie Bishop Sankey and the speedy Dexter McCluster, who was formerly with the Chiefs.

BetAnySports customers will see Tennessee in a new 3-4 defensive alignment under the brand-new coordinator, Ray Horton. They have brought in some new blood, and the word at of training camp is that they had some trouble adjusting.

If they have learned their lessons well, they might be able to exploit a Kansas City offensive line that is in a bit of a shakeup. Donald Stephenson, the right tackle, is under suspension, and Eric Fisher, the #1 overall draft choice last season, is moving over to left tackle. Can this work for Alex Smith and the Kansas City offense? Smith threw for 3313 yards in 2013, but the Chiefs want him to go downfield some more. He’ll be handicapped right off the bat by the drug suspension of Dwayne Bowe, and this team is not deep at the wide receiver position. Once again, Jamaal Charles, who had 1980 yards from scrimmage last season, will be counted on heavily.

Kansas City got out of the gate quickly last year, winning its first nine games. But then they proceeded to lose six of their last eight. They were second in the league in turnover margin, but will that figure even out this year? Which team will show up for Andy Reid on opening day?
