Packers vs Lions – CJ’s Take:

During the early part of the schedule, they were questioning why Aaron Rodgers was having such a subpar season. Now he is being mentioned prominently in connection with the league’s Most Valuable Player award. Rodgers is past the 4000-yard mark, after last week’s 38-25 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. He has 36 touchdown passes with only seven interceptions. And he has had to operate without a running attack for most of the year. Eddie Lacy went down with an injury, and James Starks had a combination of injuries and ineffectiveness. Ty Montgomery was summoned from the wide receiver spot to take a place in the backfield, and he has averaged six yards per carry, so there is no question that head coach Mike McCarthy knows how to improvise.

And of tremendous aid to Rodgers along the way has been the comeback season of Jordy Nelson, who could actually reach the 100-reception plateau with nine catches in Sunday night’s game. Nelson has 1191 yards and 14 touchdowns in what was a remarkable year in rebounding from the knee injury that took him out for all of 2015.

With all of the secondary injuries Green Bay has suffered, it’s really been incredible that they have held any offense in check. Remember that this is a team that gave up 89 points in losing back-to-back to the Tennessee Titans and Washington Redskins. But they have been spotless since, giving up only 36 points over their next three, including a 38-10 pasting of the Seattle Seahawks, and they got their revenge over the Vikings last week. Remember that Minnesota beat them in the season finale of 2015 to capture the division crown.

The Lions have had their opportunities, but have not been able to take advantage. They scored only six points against the New York Giants two weeks ago, and then they were actually a touchdown ahead of the Dallas Cowboys, but Dallas stiffened up and scored 28 unanswered points to capture the three-touchdown victory. Matthew Stafford has a finger injury, something that is not unknown to VietBet patrons, and over the last two weeks, using his special glove, he has thrown for 533 yards, although it seems like he is throwing the ball extra hard in order to compensate.

The last time these two teams played, Green Bay got off to a 31-10 halftime lead and then had to sweat it out the second half, as Detroit almost came all the way back, ultimately falling short in the 34-27 defeat. The Lions had gone a period of eight straight games without allowing more than 20 points until running into Dallas. And what has to be of at least some concern is that the Cowboys didn’t have any real incentive to improve their playoff position, since they are locked into the top seed in the NFC. But this game is the do-or die for both sides; the winner will go to the playoffs and the loser will stay home.

Both teams have a 9-6 straight-up record, and interestingly enough, they are both 7-7-1 against the NFL pointspread. But is this really an “even” matchup? It looks like Green Bay is the team that has had answers to adversity and more momentum right now. They promised to run the table after an embarrassing 42-24 loss to the Redskins, and they are one step away from doing just that.
