Denver Broncos vs Kansas City Chiefs – CJ’s Take:

Of course, many people heard about the rift that took place in the Denver locker room, or allegedly did, where the defense, one of the best units in the NFL, has lost patience with the inability of the offense to take advantage of opportunities. And they have a point; the Broncos have converted only six of their 36 third-down chances in the last three games, losing two of them, and this has spoiled the defensive effort, which has allowed only 39 points over the three-game stretch.

The Chiefs had a 14-0 lead over the Tennessee Titans last week, but wound up losing a 19-17 decision at home. They are only slightly more capable on offense, so there is a pretty good possibility that in the cold weather, defense will tell the tale. And maybe turnovers as well; Kansas City is at +13 in that category.

Obviously, Trevor Siemian is not the most experienced or most dynamic quarterback in the league, although at least he has more touchdowns (16) than interceptions (8). The fact is, however, that he is not often going to take the team on his shoulders and lead them to a victory. So he needs the support of a running game, and Denver has tried a number of different alternatives to get this done. Last week, Justin Forsett, a recent acquisition, and rookie Devontae Booker combined for 54 yards. That isn’t going to get it done. The Broncos have averaged only 3.6 yards per carry, and that is poor.

The Chiefs have the steadier quarterback, although Alex Smith has thrown for fewer yards than Siemian and has only a dozen touchdown passes. They should be able to move the football a little with their ground game, led by Spencer Ware (860 yards), but VietBet patrons know that when Smith wants to go to the air, he primarily looks for tight end Travis Kelce, who could go over the 1000-yard mark in this one. Jeremy Maclin, a receiver who has been bothered by a groin injury this season, is back to work and caught six passes for 82 yards in last Sunday’s 16-3 loss to the New England Patriots.

Interestingly, the Chiefs have had 46 fewer first downs than their opponents. They have also allowed 45.2% success on third down, which is not an encouraging metric for the defense. Both of these teams have a deficit when it comes to third-down conversions, meaning that their opponents convert more often than they do.

Of course, the Broncos are double-tough in the secondary, yielding only 5.3 yards per attempt and 53.8% completions. They have sacked quarterbacks 40 times. Kansas City has 15 interceptions on the season, and obviously All-Pro capability back there with cornerback Marcus Peters and safety Eric Berry. But the Chiefs have not had a lot of success laying points at home, covering the football pointspread in only two of the last 10 instances.
