Redskins Search For Answers Against Jags

By Charles Jay

The Washington Redskins looked like a listless, disorganized bunch in Jay Gruden’s NFL head coaching debut. They need to improve on that – greatly – if they are going to be any factor in the NFC East. On Sunday they will tackle the Jacksonville Jaguars in football betting action at BetAnySports that is set to begin at 1 PM ET at FedEx Field in Landover, MD.

Washington lost the last eight games of the 2013 regular season, which prompted the ouster of Mike Shanahan (among other things). With an off-season that was tainted with an awful lot of controversy about the team’s nickname, they needed to establish some better news as they took the field against the Houston Texans, who had dropped their last FOURTEEN last year. Instead, it became a comedy of errors, low-lighted by a blocked extra point, not to mention a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown. The ‘Skins outgained Houston, but still lost by double digits (17-6).

The Jaguars looked like world-beaters early on against defending NFC East champion Philadelphia, jumping out to a 17-0 lead in the first half. But they were blanked the rest of the way,. even losing the cover as a 10.5-point NFl betting underdog as the Eagles scored a late TD to make the final 34-17. That was the most upsetting “bad beat” of the first week for some people.

In the football betting odds that have been established on this game at BetAnySports, Washington is in the favorite’s role at home:

Washington Redskins -6
Jacksonville Jaguars +6

Over 43 Points -110
Under 43 Points -110

The current Washington mentor is, of course, the brother of Jon Gruden, who coached Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl victory. But it is hard to tell what Jay brings to the table that is all that special, unless it is an ability to placate Robert Griffin III, who may, in the end, wind up being more trouble than anyone intended. Griffin and Shanahan had a curious relationship; Shanahan wanted to go easy on him after his knee injury, while Griffin wanted to go full speed and complained to owner Dan Snyder. Then football bettors saw one of those classic situations where the owner was more in love with the player than with the coach, and friction developed.

No doubt Gruden sold himself as the ideal “quarterback whisperer” for the situation, and he is doing what he can to keep things rather conventional, as the plan is for Griffin to stay in the pocket as much as possible. But what kind of quarterback does that make him? He was hurried a lot by Houston’s pass rush, namely JJ Watt, and one has to wonder (despite 29 of 37 in Week 1) whether the Redskins will be able to live on his arm alone. One thing that will help is that Washington admittedly has a strong infantry behind Alfred Morris and Roy Helu, who combined for 137 yards last week.

A cliche BetAnySports customers have heard time and time again, but is precisely true here, is that the Jaguars have to play four quarters. They did not last weekend, and aside from the undrafted rookie Allen Hurns, who totaled 110 yards in receptions, no one posted numbers that were all that exciting. But Jacksonville will probably be able to make more things happen with its defense than it did last year, as coach Gus Bradley (former defensive coordinator with the Seahawks) paid special attention to it in the off-season.
