March Madness Picks – CJ’s Take:

Cal-Davis did a great job defensively in that opening game, keeping UNC-Central’s star Patrick Cole to 13 points, and holding the opponent to 36% shooting in the 67-63 victory. But what is of some concern is that they went cold over the last 5 1/2 minutes of the game, going without a field goal. Unquestionably, their strategy is going to involve slowing down what Kansas wants to do. Conversely, the Jayhawks want to run if they possibly can, and they have the horses to get that done, including the veteran point guard in Frank Mason, a player of the year candidate who averaged 20.5 points per game and made one of the more effective assaults from three-point land, hitting 48.7% of his triples. It may begin with Mason, but it certainly doesn’t end there, as we’ll explain in a few moments.

The Aggies, the Big West tournament champions, scored their title victory by a 50-47 margin over Cal-Irvine. That’s the kind of game they are looking to play. But unlike a lot of teams which like to slow the pace to a crawl and work the ball around the half-court, they are not really dependent on the three-pointer. And that might be a surprise for some people, considering that the coach is Jim Les, the former member of the Sacramento Kings who once led the NBA in three-point shooting percentage. The Aggies are only 35% from beyond the arc, which puts them around the middle of the pack as far as the NCAA’s 351 Division I schools are concerned, and they only take about 26% of their shots from downtown, which is well below the national average. They start four seniors, so they’ve got some poise out there, and one of those seniors is Brynton Lemar, who does provide some three-point punch (38.7%). But mostly they’ll be looking to Chima Moneke, the 6-6 junior forward who scored 18 points with 12 rebounds in the First Four game.

VietBet patrons who have been wondering about Josh Jackson can expect him to be in the lineup for Kansas. Jackson, who had been suspended for Kansas’ first (and as it turns out, only) Big 12 tournament game, due to some troubles surrounding a traffic incident (we won’t go into it in full), has served his one-game punishment. And if this team expects to go far in this tournament, he is going to have to play a very big role. This freshman, who will likely be a first-round NBA draft pick, offers a lot of versatility from his small forward position, and will be almost impossible for anyone on the Cal-Davis roster to match up with.

Kansas lost in the first round of the conference tournament to TCU, but coach Bill Self is rationalizing this, saying that his team was given an opportunity to “recharge” with all the extra time off. He may be right.
