Newly-promoted Watford have a stiff test on Sunday, December 20 when they host Liverpool in an important English Premier League matchup at Vicarage Road. However, they may be meeting the Reds at the right time since the Merseyside club hasn’t been playing too well of late. Watford is coming off of a 1-0 win at Sunderland a week ago and have now won three games in a row against Aston Villa, Norwich and Sunderland. Liverpool is winless in two after losing 2-0 at Newcastle and then drawing 2-2 at home at Anfield with West Bromwich Albion last week. This will be the first encounter between Liverpool and Watford in close to 10 years.

Liverpool has won the last five contests in all competitions with four of them being clean sheets. Watford’s last win was a 1-0 result at Anfield back in August of 1999 and it was their only victory in the last nine encounters with the other eight all being losses. Overall, these clubs have met just 24 times in the past with Liverpool winning 17, losing four and drawing the other three.

They’ve kept five clean sheets at home and have failed to score in four of those eight games. They’ve also kept a pair of clean sheets on the road and been shut out once.

Liverpool enters the weekend below Watford in the standings as they sit in ninth place with 24 points from six wins, six draws and six defeats. They’ve scored 20 times and allowed 19 goals against. The Reds have three victories on the road along with three draws and a pair of losses with 10 goals scored and eight allowed. They’ve recorded five clean sheets so far this campaign and have failed to score on four occasions. However, they’ve been playing well on their travels lately with three wins, a loss and two draws in their past half a dozen away outings.
Watford has never won two straight games at home in the Premier League they could make a bit of history with a victory on Sunday. They may need the points since their next three matches are also against some of the Premier League’s bigger clubs as they face Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. All of Watford’s home wins this season have come when they’ve shut the opposition out. Whenever they’ve concede a goal at Vicarage road this season they’ve lost the match. Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney have been playing well for Watford lately while nobody has really shone for Liverpool. The Reds will be without Joe Gomez, John Flanagan, Dejan Lovren, Jordan Rossiter, Danny Ings and the forever injured Daniel Sturridge for the game. Watford will likely be without Joel Ekstrand, Rene Gilmartin and Tommy Hoban.
