The second 2015 Copa America quarterfinal showdown will kick off on Thursday, June 25 when a pair of underdogs square off against each other. Bolivia will be taking on Peru for a place in the final four when they meet at the Estadio Municipal Bicentenario Germán Becker in Temuco, Chile. Peru’s last visit to the semifinals came in 2011 while Bolivia hasn’t made it that far since back in 1997. If the match ends in a draw it will go to directly to a penalty shootout to decide a winner rather than 30 minutes of extra time.

Peru lost a heartbreaker in their opening group match as Brazil downed them 2-1 on a last-minute goal. They followed the defeat up with a 1-0 shutout victory over Venezuela and then another clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Colombia. Their 1-1-1 record was good enough for four points and second place in Group C. Bolivia reached the final eight by edging Ecuador 3-2 in their opener and then drawing 0-0 against Mexico before being hammered 5-0 by the host nation Chile. They also finished the group stage with a 1-1-1 record and were runners up in Group A.
The last four meetings between Peru and Bolivia have all ended in draws. Bolivia is managed by Mauricio Soria, who’s in his first season with the team. The squad scored just three goals in the group stage and allowed seven against. Peru also has a relatively new manager in Ricardo Gareca and they scored just a pair of goals in the group stage, but also conceded only two. Bolivia hosted the tournament back in 1997 and lost in the final and hadn’t won a Copa America game since until this year. Incredibly, it was also their first away win in more than 20 years.
Overall, Bolivia has two wins, two losses and two draws in their past six matches while Peru sports the same record. Peru did well to finish second in their group considering it contained Brazil and Colombia and it’s easy to see why they’re favored to win this game. Peru has reached the final eight seven times out of the last eight Copa America tournaments, but the furthest they’ve gone in that period was the semifinals. They were beaten by eventual champions Uruguay, but managed to slam Venezuela 4-1 to take the third-place showdown. It was their best finish at the tournament since winning it in 1975.
Paolo Guerrero scored five goals for Peru in 2011, but he’s yet to score in this tournament. Bolivia and Peru have met numerous times in the past with Peru winning 22 of the meetings and Bolivia taking 13 of them. Their last Copa America encounter came back in 2011 and ended in a 2-2 draw.
