The Carolina Panthers need to win their final two games to go a perfect 16-0 on the season. Their next outing takes place this Sunday, December 27 when they meet the Atlanta Falcons at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Panthers almost blew a 28-point lead against the New York Giants last weekend, but managed to down them 38-35 on the road via a last-second field goal. They lead the NFC South and have easily clinched a playoff spot as well as their division. The Panthers became the fourth club in the history of the NFL to reach the 14-0 plateau with the win. Division rivals Atlanta still has a chance at a wildcard spot after beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 23-17 in Florida last weekend. They enter the game in second spot in the NFC South at 7-7.

The Panthers struggled a bit against the Giants last time out after shutting out the Falcons 38-0 at home just two rounds ago on December 13. Quarterback Cam Newton showed once again why he’s the favorite to capture the league’s MVP award this season as he passed for five touchdowns and 340 yards. He has now thrown for five touchdowns in three of his past five contests. To top things off, Newton also ran for a season-best 100 yards.

Newton tossed three touchdown passes against Atlanta a couple of weeks ago, but posted his season-best 153.3 quarterback rating in that victory. Carolina has averaged 38.8 points a week in their past five outings and there’s no sign they’ll be slowing down this weekend. It’ll be hard for the Falcons to go into the game with much confidence since Carolina has pounded them by a combined 72-3 score in their last two encounters. The Panthers are also 5-1 both against the spread and straight up against Atlanta in their last half dozen meetings with two straight wins in Atlanta.
The Falcons managed to snap a six-game losing skid in week 15 with their triumph in Jacksonville. Receiver Julio Jones was the top man with 118 yards on nine receptions as well as a touchdown, which was his first since back on November 1. In addition running back Devonta Freeman broke his slump as he scored his first touchdown since week six. It was a huge victory for Atlanta since it kept their slim playoff hopes alive as they’re fighting for the NFC’s second wildcard berth. However, to clinch the spot they need to win their final two games and hope Minnesota loses theirs.
Fans shouldn’t get carried away after last week’s win though since the team scored just an average of 14 points an outing in their recent six-game losing streak. The Falcons will be glad to know that Carolina has conceded a total of 73 points in their past two road trips though. Atlanta will need a big game out of Jones, who ranks as the second-best receiver in the league this season, and Freeman will also have to come up with a gem of a contest. Atlanta has struggled at home after winning their first three games at the Georgia Dome as they’ve lost their past three there and are 0-4 against the spread in their past four home fixtures.
