Will Jets Try to Play Some Smashmouth with Bengals?

By Charles Jay

The New York Jets may have actually done pretty well last year, getting to the .500 mark despite having a rookie quarterback who threw more interceptions (21) than touchdowns (12). The Cincinnati Bengals won the AFC North division and won all eight of their games at home, then lost when they hosted San Diego in the playoffs. These teams meet each other on Saturday night, as NFL pre-season betting action will be slated to begin at 7 PM ET at Paul Brown Stadium.

The Jets began their pre-season schedule with a 13-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts, in which they put forth just a so-so effort on offense. The Bengals were involved in a much wilder game; a 41-39 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that is very unusual for the pre-season.

Of course, the Jets are trying to improve on an 8-8 season that had Rex Ryan a little worried about his job. Marvin Lewis has lasted eleven seasons with the Bengals, making him the second-longest tenured coach in the league.

In the NFL pre-season betting lines that are posted on this game by VietBet, the Bengals are favored by a field goal:

Cincinnati Bengals -3 (-115)
New York Jets +3 (-105)

Over 41.5 Points -110
Under 41.5 Points -110

The theme for the Jets during camp is to ramp up the offense. And there are a few people they hope can help them get there. Eric Decker out up big numbers in Denver – 87 catches for 1288 yards last year, for example – but to some extent the jury is still out, as Peyton Manning has the ability to make a lot of wide receivers look good. Chris Johnson is going to be part of what Rex Ryan hopes is a very potent committee of running backs, and there is no question that if he is fresh, Johnson can be a difference-maker. Michael Vick may not come into the picture unless Geno Smith proves ineffective or gets injured. VietBet customers who have followed the goings-on in camp have read that the Jets are very pleased with the kind of off-season tape study Smith has undertaken.

The Jets will be without at least one receiver in Saturday’s game. Jalen Saunders was involved in a car accident on his way to the training facility on Friday. Details are sketchy, and apparently that is intentional. The team would only say that Saunders had a “medical incident” inside the car. NFL pre-season bettors saw that Smith and Vick completed seven passes between them last week, while Matt Simms had his moments moving the team, completing 13 of 17 and leading the Jets on the drive that resulted in the winning 51-yard field goal by rookie Andrew Furney.

Cincinnati had a balanced offense against Kansas City, with 196 passing yards and 180 on the ground. They used three quarterbacks – aside from Andy Dalton and veteran backup Jason Campbell, they also had Matt Scott, who led the team in rushing with 68 yards and also threw up before one play. So that game had it all.

Campbell suffered an elbow injury and might miss this game. Rookie AJ McCarron is definitely out. Tyler Wilson, who kind of bombed out in Oakland, has been signed and may actually get into this game. Since he’s been in camp a very short time, that might affect the timing of this offense in the second half.
