NCAA Football Betting – Michigan State and Iowa Have a Play-In For the Playoff

There haven’t been too many bigger surprises in college football this season than the Iowa Hawkeyes, who were not expected to be a major contender in the Big Ten, yet have run through their entire schedule undefeated. On Saturday night they will play for the conference title and an opportunity to compete for the national championship, in all likelihood. Their opponents are the Michigan State Spartans, who can make a legitimate argument that they should be undefeated. Iowa vs Michigan State NCAAF Big 10 Championship Betting Preview

Iowa is 12-0 straight-up, and they have covered all six of their games away from home, not to mention 15 of their last 18. That’s a pretty powerful pointspread trend to be carrying into this game, although they face a Michigan State squad which has been covering numbers lately. The Spartans are 11-1 straight-up, and even though they went 0-6 ATS to start the season, they have now covered five of their last six. The game they missed was a 39-38 upset loss at Nebraska, in which they were victimized by a last-second touchdown that came as a result of a bad call by the officials. Of course, you can’t fill out a complete report on this MSU squad without mentioning that they were the beneficiaries of that fumbled punt snap on the part of Michigan, where they scored a touchdown with no time remaining and beat the Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

There is little doubt that Iowa has to do a lot of business on the ground, and they have a trio of running backs who are fully capable. Tops among them is Jordan Canzeri, who has averaged 5.5 yards per carry and scored a dozen touchdowns. Coach Kirk Ferentz has gotten steady if not spectacular play at of quarterback CJ Beathard, who comes from a very prominent football family and has suffered only three interceptions in 303 attempts. This has been great relief for program that lost last year’s starter, Jake Rudock, to Michigan, where he is a graduate transfer.

Iowa is also ranked sixth in the nation in defending the run, and that might pose an interesting challenge for this Michigan State squad, which is solid but not sensational with its ground attack. However, BetAnySports patrons should be fully aware by now that quarterback Connor Cook is being held as perhaps the top NFL prospect at his position. Cook has thrown 24 touchdown passes with just four interceptions, and he came back from an injury last week against Penn State, throwing for 248 yards.

What might be most impressive about the Spartans is that even without Cook, they defeated previously-undefeated Ohio State in Columbus to put themselves in this position. In that game, the defense allowed only FIVE first downs; this coming just two weeks after yielding 499 yards to Nebraska.
